MYST Dumb and Dumber

For my last MYST EVER i decided to do the movie Dumb and Dumber. My little brother and I watched this movie 2 weekends ago while our family was on a little bit of a road trip.  This is a family movie that is watched at least once a year and it just makes you cry in laughter from the beginning until the end.  It's humor is a little sick and twisted though so it's not for everyone it even might offend some but i love it. the movie is about  A pair of dumb friends named Harry and Lloyd set out on a cross country trip to return a briefcase full of money to its rightful owner, a beautiful woman named Mary Swanson. However, the duo are unaware of a bigger conspiracy involving Mary and the briefcase, and a pair of criminals involved in the conspiracy attempt to chase Harry and Lloyd down for the briefcase. The stories plot might seem a little out there, that's because it is but I'm telling you it is hysterical.  Having watched this movie basically since birth it was hard for me to do this but i gave the movie 4/5 stars, it is very deserving of that 5th star but if i was a film critic i would be misleading a certain a group of people that don't share my sick humor. and that is why it wasn't 5 stars, most people i feel will love it but there are some scenes that would make some feel uncomfortable or just make them think it's stupid.
The Farrelly brothers directed this movie and you can tell if you have seen some of their other films because they share the same sick humor which I'm sure is being generated by them. One of their movies that i think is really similar is  "There's Something About Mary" because it's a similar plot about a guy tracking down his high school sweet heart and he travels across the  country and has some pretty irregular events occur that are funny.  Also he is in a competition for her love with 3 other guys and the movie again has that sick humor.  Me My Self and Irene is another movie directed by the Farrelly brothers that is very similar.  you have to watch them to really find out what I'm talking about.  see for yourself.
Trailer:    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5pZCQT7JkM
Most of this movie was filmed in aspen, colorado which really offered most of the setting which was a big part in the movie just with the mountains in the back round it looked really natural and cool and made the picture better.  This movie though wasn't made to wow you with cinematic elements it was made for you to laugh so the composition was really the most important part of the movie.  without the story this movie would have been as good as what i could come up with on my Iphone.
one scene that i will remember forever is when Lloyd drives over 100 miles in the wrong direction and harry gets so mad because they run out of money and cant pay for gas. so harry gives up on the trip and starts walking home and abandons lloyd but as he's walking lloyd goes home sells a bunch of stuff like harry's dead bird to a blind kid and buys a mini bike to get them to aspen and me being a little kid i thought it was the coolest thing ever.  he shows up and harry drops the famous quote "you just came back and totally redeemed yourself"   then they drive the rest of the way on a mini bike it was priceless.

Formal Film Studies. #2

For my Formal Film Studies I decided to watch three Happy Madison Production Movies.  Happy Madison Productions is an american film production group that was founded by actor Adam Sandler in 1999, their office is located in Culver City, California on Sony Pictures Studio's lot.  The three movies I Chose to watch were Eight Crazy Nights, That's My Boy, and Grown Ups 2 .  I chose these three because i have seen a lot of Happy Madison production's but never these three.
Grown Ups 2

That's My Boy

Eight Crazy Nights
Storylines:
Adam Sandler invites you to share some holiday cheer in the new, no-holds-barred musical comedy Adam Sandler's 8 Crazy Nights. Davey Stone, a 33-year old party animal, finds himself in trouble with the law after his wild ways go too far. In keeping with the holiday spirit, the judge gives Davey one last chance at redemption-spend the holiday performing community service as the assistant referee for the youth basketball league or go to jail. Davey thinks he's gotten off easy until he meets Whitey Duvall, the eccentric, elf-like head referee. The mismatch between Whitey's good heart and never-ending optimism and Davey's constant troublemaking soon have them both wondering if going to jail wouldn't have been easier! In this new, full-length animated feature about basketball, old girlfriends, holiday spirits, and the mall, Adam Sandler voices the three lead characters of Whitey, Davey, and Whitey's fraternal twin sister Eleanore! Written by Anonymous  (Eight Crazy Nights)

While still in his teens, Donny (Adam Sandler) fathered a son, Todd (Andy Samberg), and raised him as a single parent up until Todd's 18th birthday. Now, after not seeing each other for years, Todd's world comes crashing down on the eve of his wedding when an uninvited Donny suddenly shows up. Trying desperately to reconnect with his son, Donny is now forced to deal with the repercussions of his bad parenting skills. Written by Official site   (That's My Boy)

After having the greatest time of his life three summers ago, Lenny (Adam Sandler), decides he wants to move his family back to his hometown and have them grow up with his gang of childhood friends and their kids. But between old bullies, new bullies, schizophrenic bus drivers, drunk cops on skis, psycho grade school girlfriends and 400 costumed party crashes he finds out that sometimes crazy follows you. Written by Happy Madison  (Grownups 2)
Style:
All three of these movies share the same genre and thats comedy, most of if not all of Adam Sandler's
movies are comedy's.  Thats the main style that these movies share and that's there composition,
the movies storyline's aren't similar because all 3 movies are entirely different movies, but they
all share the same crude humor Adam Sandler put's into his movies.  you can tell the same Film
group was responsible for all 3 because they are so similar in that category.  The movies Style
isn't to special because there not trying to WOW you by any of the shots or angles they're really
just trying to make you laugh through all of their humor, and i must add all 3 movies are very funny.
Eight Crazy nights is different then the others though a little because it is animated, but just because
it's animated doesn't meant it's a children's movie.  i would say thats the most inappropriate out of
the 3.
Industry:
All 3 of these movies were directed by different directors which i find weird because they're all your
typically comedy Adam Sandler movies and they all feel the same. Also there All Happy Madison
productions obviously so why wouldn't Adam Sandler just stick with a director he liked?  Grown ups
2 and eight crazy nights were both rated pg-13. eight crazy nights i can see why it was rated that
because it had some inappropriate parts for younger kids but Grown ups 2 sort of felt like a "cute"
kids movie to me so i didn't understand why they were the same.  That's My Boy was rated R due to
obvious reasons and it's not often Happy Madison productions or Adam Sandler does an R rated film
so it caught me of guard a little bit because Sandler had a role that he doesn't typically act in his
other films.
Technology:
Again these movies weren't really trying to wow you with it's great shots or hide any hidden messages
in the films.  They didn't do anything to fancy, there goal was to make it a good and entertaining
movie through comedy.  but having said that the composition of all 3 again was interesting.  The
Stories in the movies are all kind of bizarre like they wouldn't really every happen but thats what
makes the movies so good because there so funny and entertaining.  Grown Ups 2 is the most realistic
and that story probably occurs in reality. Moving back to your hometown with all your best friends
and having your kids grow up together but the other two stories plots are just a little over the edge
Culture:
All 3 movies offered a different message and that wasn't really their goal because they're comedies
so it was hard to take them serious but at the end of the movie it sort of wrapped up a big point.
In that's my boy the message was that family is one of the most important things no matter
how messed up your family is you'll always have that to turn to for help.  in Eight Crazy Nights tells you
that no matter what someones past says there is still a good person in everyone.  The supporting actor
finds that in Adam Sandlers character in that movie and he didnt care how bad his past was but he
was willing to help because he new there was good in him.  in Grown Ups 2 it was similar to thats my boy
but a little different because this time it was family you could turn to but also your good friends. and
if you surround yourself with good people good things will happen.
Politics and History:
these films are really irrelevant to politics and history there wasn't really a connection between those

1975 movie post

1. My Story is about a heroin drug dealer James Franco who will be played by Sylvester Stallone. He took in Frank Ricci played by John Travolta at a young age and taught him the business of dealing Heroin.  Franco is a father figure to Ricci and Franco gives him advice all the time.  A little heat is coming on the 2 because they have been successfully dealing heroin in the streets of LA for quite some time. The local police are starting to catch on to their business and are looking to take them down.  one day their at a bar and a waitress catches Frank's eye, Molly Mayson who is played by Julie Christie. They hit it off instantly, Ricci trusts her enough to let her in on his real occupation.  Franco explains to Ricci he's spent most of his life in this business and its not worth it to make it a career out of it and you need to get out.  with pressure coming from Franco, the police, and most importantly molly Frank decides to go out while he's on top and marry molly and live happily ever after.  I feel this movie would be effective because in 1975 there was a serious heroin epidemic going on in the United States and people would want to view stuff like that. Also violence and sex always sells so my movie contains both of those elements. there is a hidden meaning in my story that where i think the audience can take something from it, the message is Life is worth more then drugs and money, and the people you surround yourself with is what's going to make you happy. Like how Franco got to realize thats what it's about when he saw frank get out of the business and start a family.  and Frank even realized it when he stepped away from the business to get married and start a family

2. as far as genre my movie is an american crime fiction drama, i chose this because these are the types of movies i like and right after watching The Godfather i just kept going with it.  it fits in with the time in the United States in 1975 the US was having similar problems my movie characters had to face.  and it did effect how i chose my cast and crew because with a genre like that i couldn't go pick wimpy characters i needed to pick ones that looked tough and fierce

3. I Chose John Cassavetes to direct this film because around this time he directed the movie The Killing of a Chinese Bookie and it was similar to the plot of my movie an American crime drama also he has a great history of directing successful movies so thats why i stuck with him.  as far as the actors at the time John Travolta was only 21 so i felt he would make a great actor that fit into the role of being a young man working for an older guy where he could look up to him so he fit that role and sylvester stallone is his father figure guiding him threw the business and they are both fierce actors and have that tough look to them so it worked out. For Julie Christie's role i also wanted a tough women where she could handle knowing about the business not like in the Godfather where al Pacino's wife wasn't ok with it and she didn't really belong with that family.  But Christie could act the role of a tough women and also she could catch the eye of John travolta and the audience.  i chose to focus on costumes and make up i wanted people to feel like this movie is actually what it was like in 1975 in LA.

4.My films rating will be restricted or R. My film contains intense violence, drug abuse, profanity, and alcohol use. All these would meet the criteria for an R rated movie.

5. I like violent drug/gang type films so i just went with it i also combined a couple characteristics of my favorite movies.  in the Italian job Mark Whalbergh has a role model he looks up to that tells him he needs to get out of this business and start a family. also in american gangter frank lucas has a mentor that shows him the way. so i just made a movie i'd want to watch

MYST

For my Myst post I watched a movie with one of my favorite actors Gerard Butler.  My Last MYST post was with Gerard Butler as well but this time it was in the movie "Olympus Has Fallen"
This movie came out March 22nd 2013 so its a pretty new movie.  "White House Down" is a Movie that has pretty much the same plot that came out June, 18, 2013.  I saw both of these Films and i will have to say i definitely liked Olympus Has Fallen more.  In both movies the plots are identical basically where someone makes an attack on the White House trying to harm the president.  The reason i liked Olympus Has Fallen better is because Gerard Butler and Aaron Eckhart's acting.  They were the president and body guard in Olympus Has Fallen, i liked them more as characters because they made the story more believable and more serious. And thats the attitude both movies tried to have, like a serious drama.  But in White House Down Channing Tatum and Jamie Fox didn't really fulfill that attitude for me, at some points it felt like a comedy where as white house down stuck to the plot and story the whole time.
On IMDb.com they rated Olympus Has Fallen a 6.4 out of ten and they rated White House Down a 6.3 which i believe is an accurate comparison in ratings because they were both good but i thought OHF was a little better. But I do disagree with IMDb's rating, I gave Olympus has fallen 8/10 stars there wasn't really any boring scenes or anything so i didn't feel the need to deduct any stars also it kept you on your toes the whole movie and was action packed.
All the scenes in OHF that weren't shot in the White House were shot in Louisiana, but most of the movie was filmed in Washington DC, and in the actual White House which i thought was pretty cool.  The movie looked realistic because it was in was in the actual White House.  But a lot of the scenes around the white house depended on computer-generated imagery because they physically couldn't blow up and destroy the white house like they did in the movie or take down the washington memorial with a plane. Also something interesting about the filming was  that some of the shots were done by Morgan Freemen who was also in the movie.

There wasn't really just one key scene that stuck out to me but what i will remember was all of the scenes where Gerard Butler was moving around in the white house taking down the north Korean terrorist's and because he worked there in the passed as a body guard he knew all the hiding places and secrets about the house.  So he took down a group of 50 all by himself.  And all of the scenes were cool in their own and different ways. One scene that i will remember is when he talks to the Head terrorist on one of his men's walky talky that Gerard butler took from him after he killed him.  He told the lead Terrorist that this was going to end with him putting his knife in his brain, and thats how it ended.  it was a little gruesome but i remember it for some reason.
I would recommend this movie for anyone that likes action movies really but also Gerard Butler fans i don't think i've seen a bad movie with him in it.

Rebel Without a Cause response

1.      Take a look at these two quotes:
a.     “The drama and hepcat dialogue feel clunky now...” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
b.    “Rebel without a Cause has as much to say today as it did in the 1950s.” Chris Wood, Senses of Cinema
Who’s right?  Is Rebel… a timeless film that effectively captures the alienation, awkwardness, and angst of youth culture in any generation?  Or, is it a dated relic, unable to speak to or for contemporary youth?  Which critic is closer to “right”?

Rebel without a cause is a movie i enjoyed, but at the same time couldn't connect with to well.  A lot of the problems and situations that took place in that movie don't take place in todays world.   the movie was filmed in 1955 and feels like it, it doesn't resemble to much from todays world or family structure, or how kids even act today.   Plato is an example of something you don't really see today, it's the first time i really encountered someone who acts like this.  no kids today drive cars of cliffs for fun, break into abandon homes, or go around shooting kids. so I'm going to side with Peter Bradshaw because all the info is far fetched and wouldn't fit into anything normal today, a kid simpily can't relate to it.    Also the movie did feel like it was set in the 50's and the morals and values just don't work for me like they worked for kids back then the world is very different from what the movie portrays.

MYST #2 Chasing Mavericks

The movie i have chosen for my second movies in my spare time post is chasing mavericks.  The movie is based on the real life of professional surfer Jay Morriarty.  The story goes into depth and tells Jay Morriarty's path to becoming a pro surfer and his mentor teaching him. it shows him as a kid and all the hard work and dedication he had to put in in order to become what he wanted to be.  This movie was by far one of the best movies i've seen this year, i might go as far to say it's the best.  I give this movie 4.5 /5 stars the reason it's not 5/5 is because there is one point in the movie that makes it extremely sad but i guess it is needed where it is placed in the movie.  other then that sad feeling i would say it was near perfect.
one reason that i wanted to see this movie was Gerard Butler, he is one of my favorite actors. but one thing different about this film compared to his others was that this wasn't a action packed film like your use to with him, so i didn't know what to expect.  I've seen Law Abiding Citizen and in that movie he is very smart and witty i would say thats the only connection in both movies. he is superior to everyone he is always just a step ahead of people in the two movies. and his ambition in both movies is unmatched.  but having said that there are drastic differences in Chasing Mavericks he is a father who looks over a neighborhood boy and finds out there dreams are very similar.  in law abiding citizen it consists of him murdering a bunch of people to bring them to justice so he portrays a very different character in both movies.
Some cinematic elements in this film are green screen. in order to make the maverick waves and successfully be safe showing jay surfing them they had to use a green screen. they wouldn't risk putting an actor in front of some of the biggest waves in the world, that kill some people. some maverick waves get over 100 feet so it could be dangerous if they didn't use a green screen.  but it looks very realistic and i couldn't really tell any difference.
In the Movie one scene that stuck with me was when frosty Jay's mentor's wife died.  it was a really sad time in the movie and it made you feel really bad. it was a hard time for everyone and frosty just disappeared.  Gerard Butler as Frosty the next day paddled out almost 4 miles and just sat in the water and floated with the current. no one knew where he was other then Jay because he told him thats where he went when he needed. and no one was capable of getting there by paddeling other then a select few. and that was a part of jays training to be able to paddle that far. it was kind of a turning point in the movie where jay's goals started happening and Frosty was uplifted to see it happen.  it's hard to explain but the movie just made you feel good after so much bad happen'd in it.

1935 blog post "The Struggle"

The Struggle
1.The Struggle is based on an italian immigrant Dom Perri played by Henry Fonda.  Dom Perri Moves his family, wife and 3 kids (2 boys, 1 girl) to New York City in 1928.  He moves in hope of finding work and a chance for his kids to have a better life.  Perri originally finds work in a factory working for a salary just enough to pay the rent and put food on the table.  His 3 kids Jackie Searle, Jane Whithers, and Billy Mahn have a hard time adjusting to the american lifestyle and an even harder time learning english, but they get by.  Once the great depression hits it cause Dom to lose his job.  their family is put into a bind not having money to pay the bills, being evicted from apartment after another.  Doms oldest son Emillo is forced to drop out of school anf go to work for the family.  after a couple months of the struggle Dom toughs it out and finds work as a construction worker and is able to move his family to a house in Long Island.  The message is that hard work will get you through anything as long as you keep going and never give up no matter how bad it gets,

2.are genre we chose was drama and our story really fit the era that was currently going on in the united states so drama offered us the best way to connect with our viewers.

3.  We chose to work with 20th century fox, this was the best studio for us to pick for this movie because like Dom Perri 20th century fox faced a struggles too.  In may of 1935 there was a merger between 20th century and fox because fox was going under due to the great depression, so they joined 20th century.  So the attitude that we wanted are characters to portray was already instilled in our studio due to the depression also they owned the contract of henry fond who was a great drama actor.

4. We were limited to only choosing 20th century fox actors and actresses because in 1935 the studios held their contracts and they couldn't act for anyone other then their studios.  so we picked the best and most suitable 20th century fox actors and actresses.  for the main character we chose henry fonda because he was in good drama movies before and had that appearance of a tough hard working character that we were looking for.  for his kids we chose Jackie Searle, Billy Mahn , and Jane Withers.   we were limited to children actors and these kids were the best options.  Henry King was our director and we chose him because he was one of the 20th century fox directors and worked with dramas before.  our focus was cinematography so that our audience could really feel how bad life really got for them and to focus on their situation up close.

5. for the hayes code the biggest thing was we couldn't show children being abused or beaten so we couldn't show the struggle they were actually going through that was the biggest problem. and we couldn't show dom relying on alcohol or drugs because that wasn't allowed so he couldn't rely on that but we weren't going to make it a big part any way so it didn't effect us that much

6. i wouldn't have had the family aspect.  just him moving here with a friend or a girlfriend kind of like tony montana in scarface that was the only disagreement. i like how scarface was set up how he came here alone and made it illegally but he did.

Formal Film Study Gavin O'Connor, Pride and Glory, Miracle, Warrior

For my formal film studies project I decided to watch and analyze 3 of Gavin O'Connor's movies.  Gavin O'Connor is an American film director, screen writer, producer, playwright, and actor.  The 3 movies I viewed of his were "Warrior", "Miracle", and "Pride and Glory".  The Movie Warrior is about two brothers that were separated in their teens due to their alcoholic and abusive father, one son going with the mother, the other going with the father.  Tommy Riordan one of the brothers returns from the war in Iraq to reunite with his father.  His other brother Brendan is a high school science teacher who is struggling to pay the bills.  But both brothers share a similar gift, Fighting.  The two start to train for the same high stakes tournament that will give them the money they need if they win, both not knowing the other is training for it.  Tommy and Brendan eventually meet in the finals after both having tough battles getting their.  The movie Miracle is based on a true story of the 1980 mens US olympic hockey team.  It goes in depth of how Coach Herb Brooks upset everyone by taking a bunch of college kids to the olympics to take on the Soviet professionals.  the game took place during the cold war and it allowed the United States to do their talking on the ice as well, not just the war that was going on.  The odds were against the US team but they overcame obstacles and adversity to make a dream come true.  The Third movie i watched was by far the worst in my opinion. Pride and Glory is about a group of corrupt New York City cops, but their is a police station where the father is the police chief and his two sons are straight cops and his son-in-law is a crooked cop.  His son-in-law does many illegal things because he has the power to behind his badge, all of his malice acts catch up with him.  In the end the son-in-law gets the hole family in trouble.
Style
The word I would use to describe the style of all 3 of these movies is DARK.  Just the overall feeling in  them is sad for most of the movie if not the whole thing.  all 3 of the movies are depressing, but warrior and miracle branch of and have happy endings.  Warrior and Miracle are depressing because they continue to show the brothers in warrior and the hockey players in miracle struggle and fail over and over again.  I guess those two movies offer a good lesson that if you keep working as hard as you can you'll eventually reach your goal.  but in warrior the father has a relapse after 1000 days of being sober and it just breaks you down because their family is just ruined again where they make the family non existent and makes it seem like there is so much hate between all of them.  but in the end it shows that the family is finally at peace.  in miracle it's the basically the same thing, these kids grew up dreaming of being NHL hockey players and winning the olympics. They go through all of this hard work for some of them to be cut from the team a week before they go.  It's hard to watch someone's dreams get crushed like they do in the film but it has a happy ending like warrior and they go on to upset the soviets to win the gold.  So those two movies are just depressing, dark, evil, and gray until the end when the team reaches their goal and the family is at peace.   Pride and Glory just sucks because it follows the same path as the other 2 but when the other 2 turn off and have a happy ending Pride and Glory just keeps getting more and more depressing.  Nothing goes right for the family the whole movie, nothing good happens it just makes you feel sad, that terrible things happen to good people. Their brother-in-law who caused all the families problems just gives up in the end and allows criminals to murder him.  But you don't feel bad that he's murdered because he deserved it but he leaves the family with all these problems he caused.  and his brothers wife is dying of cancer the other brothers life is in the shitter the whole movie is just depressing and dark again.
Indusrty
Gavin O'Connor's work is different then most film directors, I don't think he would be capable of making a comedy movie. His work is similar to directors who make more crime/ drama type movies. It's unlike the work of Adam Mckay who is one of my favorite directors because all of his movies are funny and make you feel good.  He directed movies like Step Brothers and The Other Guys.  In Hollywood Gavin O'Connor definitely fits in with other directors of dramas and serious movies that have a lesson involved in thier plots.
Technology
The most interesting piece of technology in these movies i would say is the sound and some of the still pictures, i have a vivid picture of some of the scenes in the movies in my head always. If i think about the movie i think about that scene in my head instantly.  But the soundtracks in Miracle and Warrior are really good I own both of them.  and the songs are used at the appropriate time in the movies, they make you feel so much different then you would feel if the songs they picked weren't in there. the one song in Warrior almost makes you want to cry at the end called "About Today" by The National.  and some of the pictures that i always  think of are

these are both key scenes in the movie where everything is quiet and it makes you think.
Politics/History
Warrior- this movie really has no connection to anything other then it's a really good story, also UFC is a rising sport in the world and there hasn't been a lot of films done on it.
Miracle-  this films content has a lot of history in it and some people who saw it might not even know it.    one reason this game was so big for the united states was that the cold war was currently going on during this time.  Other then the soviets being so good at hockey and unstoppable are countries weren't exactly seeing eye to eye.  and this game gave the united states hope and gave them something to turn to when are country was in a low place
Pride and Glory-  this movie was made in 2008 when there was currently some stories and cases where police officers were accused of police brutality, beating people up, doing things because they could and people were afraid of them.  but this movie shows that there are good cops as well that brought the bad ones to justice and this could be to show people that there are good cops.  also Gavin O'connor's father was a New York City police officer and he said "It's a birthday bash of honest cops, which was everything my father was about." and he wanted to evoke peoples thoughts about the 1970's how police were sometimes corrupt.
interesting quotes
one of my favorite quotes ever is from miracle and it is the speech coach herb brooks gave his players before the gold medal game. i think about it all the time when I'm getting ready for a bug game myself.  Great moments are born from great opportunity.
And that's what you have here tonight, boys.
That's what you've earned here, tonight.
One game.
If we played 'em ten times, they might win nine.
But not this game. Not tonight.
Tonight, we skate with 'em.
Tonight, we stay with 'em, and we shut them down because we can!
Tonight, we are the greatest hockey team in the world.
You were born to be hockey players -- every one of ya.
And you were meant to be here tonight.
This is your time.
Their time -- is done. It's over.
I'm sick and tired of hearin' about what a great hockey team the Soviets have. Screw 'em!
This is your time!!
another quote i liked was from warrior

Principal Zito: You got no business in the ring with those animals.
Tom Conlon: Actually, I used to be one of those animals
this quote doesn't have a meaning behind it like the other one but it was a funny quote in the movie that made my whole family laugh.
Main thing I discovered
I mentioned earlier the main discovery just that the movies are all dark with stories about people that have to make tough choices and overcome adversity to be great or do the right thing opposed to the easiest thing. those were trends in all of the movies.  but one thing that also stuck out was the type of camera shot that was used.  the camera was being held in the camera mans hands it wasn't on a tri-pod in alot of the scenes because they wanted to make you feel like you were running with the scene because it was an action scene and the screen would be shaking and it wasn't still like it would be if you were running

"Citizen Kane" response

2) The first draft of the title for Citizen Kane was "The American."  What can we make of this?  In what ways does the movie comment on America or the American Dream?
In Many way "The American" would be an appropriate title for Citizen Kane.  In the early 1900's people came to america because there was an opportunity to make quick and easy money and have a chance at a better life.  i was absent the first day of watching Citizen Kane, so it was hard to catch up on the plot and what was going on.  But what i picked up on was that Mr.Kane was trying to make his newspaper company the best in the world.  this movie seemed alot similar to Scar face. Where they both get ahead and get to greedy an just keep wanting more and more. They keep wanting more in attempt ti fulfill their version of the american dream.  But in the the end it comes back to haunt them  ultimately Tony Montana is murdered and Mr. Kane lives a sad life alone.  All they were trying to do is have the BEST life they could have but money got the best of both of them. and they didnt realize that they lost focus and didnt want the american dream they just wanted money.  And it is typical for an american or new immigrant in that time period to come her for a better life , but once they get caught up in stuff like they do it's easy for their dreams to quickly change

Movies in my spare time : Shooter

I  watched the movie Shooter with Mark Wahlberg this past weekend in a car ride to my brothers football game to pass some time.  Anything with Mark Wahlberg I usually see, and shooter is one of my favorite movies he has done.  I like a lot of Wahlberg's movies because there violent and have a good story.  Like most of Wahlberg's movies Shooter is action packed and keeps you on your toes, with a plot that throws a couple curveballs at you. people who would enjoy this movie are people who are interested in action, and plots with a twist, also happy endings after a rough beginning.
One key scene from Shooter that got me excited was in the end where Bob Lee Swagger  is brought before the attorney general and the FBI director in a closed-door meeting in Washington.  Where Bob Lee Swagger has to prove his innocents. And he proves that it couldn't of been him who shot the bullet, because all of his bullets are customized to his gun and if their not those bullets the gun won't function.  So he takes the bullets and asks for permission to load the gun, he puts the bullet in his gun and aims it at the attorney General and pulls the trigger.  Nothing happens because the gun won't function this ultimately proves his innocence and grants him a release from where he was being detained. He then goes and finds the man who sets him up and kills him. this scene got people interested because he picks the loaded gun up and points it at the attorney General which is highly illegal but thats what he need to do to prove he was innocent.
The film itself doesn't have really any unusual features that stick out. the filming it done with a bunch of different angles but thats about it.   couple images i really like in the movie though is when he is up in the mountains shooting and it makes everything seem so real and so natural. you don'
t always see that in movies today. Also his home that he's living in is really cool because i have a similar type of cabin that is excluded from the outside world.

I gave Shooter ****/***** stars because like I said before it is an action packed movie that kept me on my toes, and in the end Wahlberg the innocent man proves his innocents in the case of accused accusations of the attempt at executing the president.  This movie is very similar to another one of Wahlberg's movie Contraband.  It's similar to contraband because in both movies Wahlberg is just a law abiding citizen with a past and history that he's not so proud of and is trying to move on from it.  In Contraband he is an ex smuggler and is working on getting his family on the right track. in shooter he is an ex sniper shooter for the US army.  both of those lives are behind him but not ideal situations  arose where people request his skills to return, which puts him in sticky situations that he has to get out of.  And in the end of both stories Wahlberg preservers and continues on working on his new morals and beliefs . But both films start of sort of dark and continue to be dark until the end.

REVIEW OF THE REVIEWS

http://www.vulture.com/2011/09/movie_review_warrior.html  -Positive review
http://entertainment.time.com/2011/09/09/warrior-movie-review/ - Negative review

The positive review is structured first giving a very detailed summary of the movie characters and previous films they've been involved in to almost every little detail of the movie.  David Edelstein the author of the review makes an argument that is somewhat tricky to comprehend. First he stated how the motion picture is way to corny and could never have been a serious movie. So corny that he was embarrassed of the story. Later he describes how you couldn't tell that the actors were acting and it actually felt like they were the people portrayed in the movie.  Edelstein made reference to how good all the actors were and it really brought the movie together.  Edelstein's tone alters throughout the review because he first sides with a negative approach. Saying thats it's to corny and if he didn't
know the actors would be that good he wouldn't have seen it.  But he then changes to positive as he goes on to say how they really hit their roles perfectly.  His tone also comes on stronger with the vocabulary he used a lot of words that I will most likely never use. I think he uses the vocabulary that he does to try and represent the tone he was shooting for.
the Authors focus was explaining every little detail about the movie from their character and what they were as a person in the movie to the plot of the story not leaving out a detail. He also hit on the conflicts and themes explaining the situations that the characters were in and how they responded in the movie.  the movie was referenced to similar movies such as The Fighter with Mark Whalberg, and how they were similar with both having dark stories but a good ending.
The negative review's structure is very similar to the positive's, the first 3 paragraphs are dedicated on explaining the summary, the characters, and getting deep into the plot, but then finishing with what she thought of the film.  I will say the author Mary pol's argument sucks, she claims the movie jumps around to much going in irrelevant directions but to me everything makes sense. Her tone was difficult for me to understand because she seemed positive about the whole movie as she was describing it but once she got to her opinion on it she then turned negative.  like Edelstein's review Pol's uses strong vocabulary which helps the tone she was using.  the focus was also the same as the first hitting on the characters and just the story the movie was telling, the beef of both reviews was the movies characters and plot.  Pol's review also referenced to the movie The Fighter,  saying how they had similar traits.
a quote that i agreed with from the first review is "the brutality is an extension of the brothers’ inner turmoil: Tom must wreak vengeance, Brendan must be beaten down before he can rise." when you watch the movie you can feel the hate and angry tommy carries with him throughout the movie.  where i agree with the reference to brendan because he was like they say a rocky where he would get tired and strike when you least expect it.  a quote from the negitive review that i can agree with is "Hardy wears Tommy’s emotional bruises all over his face, but he goes so far into the wounded-animal act that he becomes remote." i already mentioned this in the last quote but you can see the sadness in his face and his actions, in the movie also the heavy anger he carries with him from postwar in iraq.
The negative review would be more convincing just because the positive one takes both sides of the argument. both did a great job of explaining what the actual movie contains and has in it but where they explain their opinions on it is what got me to side with the negative review.  I want to agree with the positive review but i'm not sure he agrees with himself.  where as the negative review sticks with its opinion through out the whole paper.  even though i love the movie, without seeing it i would choose the negative review on that alone.
Writing my own film review i would keep the first couple paragraphs like the authors.  i would thoroughly explain the characters and their actors, giving information on them as a person and what their trying to portray in the film.  Then i would give a very detailed paragraph on the story and plot of the movie, just like the authors did really filling you in on what takes place during the film. instead of putting my opinion of the film at the end like the 2 reviews i read i would put it at the front so the reader knows my stance on the movie from the first sentence.  i wouldn't take anything out of the reviews because everything that was in them served a purpose to the authors opinion and the description of the movie.
